The hard drive of a computer is
divided into a number of sections that store data for starting each of the
computer programs. When installing new software, the computer looks for the
first open slot to store each piece of data needed for that program. As other
information is added and removed, these data slots are separated and spread
apart. Look at it similar to your favorite rock and roll cover band. If the
bass player is in Seattle and the keyboardist in Kansas , every gig is going to take a few
days to put together.
If all the guys live in the same town, you could have a
jam session scheduled by lunchtime. Defragmenting puts all the data together in
close proximity.
To
access the defrag option:
1. Go to the Start menu at the bottom left corner
2. Choose Programs
3. Then choose the Accessories section
4. Then find System Tools and finally Disc Defragmenter.

The answer to the question of
what is defragmenting can be answered by saying its getting the band back
together.
It doesn't matter what type of
computer you have, you still have to defrag it. I can hear you saying "But
I paid an arm and a leg for that computer!" It still has to be
looked after.
